Winnipeg fire crews called to North End blaze at Orloff Metals Ltd.

WATCH: Chief Barry Carpenter of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said the fire was contained to the yard and no one was injured.

Black smoke was shooting into the air Monday afternoon as a fire burned at a business on King Street at Sutherland.

Emergency crews were on scene at Orloff Metals Ltd.

District fire chief Barry Carpenter said the building was evacuated as a precaution.

Officials believe a junk pile ignited as an operator was moving it, however, the cause is still under investigation.

“He was moving the pile around with a grapple hoe and it may have self-ignited through a spark,” Carpenter said.

Policed arrived on scene first and alerted fire crews. Three pumper trucks and an aerial truck attended.

There were no injuries.
