Gretel Hänlyn (otherwise known as 20-year-old Maddy Haelein; she took the name from her great aunt), a London-based singer-songwriter spent six weeks in Los Angeles and didn’t really enjoy it all that much, feeling that she didn’t really fit in with the cool kids. The result is a semi-angsty song that while upbeat belies something darker within. Not surprising, really, since she was raised on a diet of Nick Cave and Pink Floyd.
Fun fact: Around the age of 16, Gretel suffered from a loose diaphragm when she was young which threatened her ability to sing. It was during recovery that she started to write her own songs.
