The Harlequin Singers host first concert under new director

Tania Sheeler to lead Musical Pursuit – an interactive Broadway music performance

May 15, 2018, Hamilton, Ontario

Anyone who has gone to a concert is familiar with the request that audience members turn off their cell phones during the performance.  However, the audience at The Harlequin Singers’ upcoming June concert will be encouraged to keep their phones charged and ready.

Listeners can then participate in a quiz to test their knowledge of show tunes spanning several eras, while enjoying The Harlequins’ unique take on the Broadway repertoire.

Entitled Musical Pursuit, the interactive Broadway music performance will take place on June 23 at 7:00 p.m. and June 24 at 2:00 pm. at St. Luke’s Parish Hall, 1382 Ontario Street in Burlington.

The unique concert format is the brainchild of The Harlequin Singers’ new director, Tania Sheeler, whose passion, commitment and willingness to push boundaries promise to inject new life into the Hamilton-based choir which has been bringing Broadway tunes to our community for 51 years.

Sheeler, who took on The Harlequin Singers directorship in January 2018, brings strong choral directing chops to the role, including stints with the Hamilton Gay Men’s Chorus and the Hamilton Police Female Choir. On the musical theatre side, Sheeler has directed Cabaret (The Player’s Guild of Hamilton), Hairspray (Hammer Entertainment) and Urinetown (Hamilton Theatre Inc.).  A Hamilton resident with a one-year-old daughter, Sheeler is a teacher with the Halton District School Board.

Selections for the June concert will run the gamut from the Glee-style anthem, Don’t Stop Believin’, to favourites from blockbuster musicals of yesteryear, plus tunes that may not be as familiar but pay tribute to Harlequin’s longstanding tradition of celebrating the Broadway canon.
